Large-Scale Culture of Cell Lines
Large-scale cultures are essential, where cell cultures are used for producing useful products like biochemicals (interferon, hormones, interleukins, enzymes, antibodies, etc) Fermenters up to 10,000 are used for this purpose

Large-scale cell culture is a major industry in biotechnology, with millions of dollars turn around especially in Europe, North and South America, Africa, Japan and Indian

Cell banking is an essential and preliminary prerequisites for a large scale cell culture and its scaling up. For these, master cell banks (MCB) are first established. These master cell banks are then utilized to develop master working cell banks (MWCB). The development of MWCB should be sufficient to satisfy the needs of the production system. If MWCB is not adequate, a new master cell bank has to be developed. In order to confirm cell stability; MWCB is repeatedly subcultured and each generation subjected to screening to rule out any changein the cellular material
The scaling up of cell cultures may be done as
1. Monolayer cultures
2. Suspension cultures, or
3. Immobilized cell systems
