Bacterial Vectors - Normally, when we mix bacteria or any cell with DNA or a gene of interest, the DNA or gene of interest is subjected to restriction enzyme or DNase digestion by the host because the host cell recognizes the DNA as foreign genetic material and assumes it as a virus or some infectious material.

Hence for transferring a DNA or gene of interest into a bacteria or cell, we require a vehicle which carries out gene of interest and some identification tags which the bacteria recognizes as friend. Normally these identification tags are nothing but some specific DNA molecules which are unique for that bacterium or cell.

These DNA molecules, which carry these identification tags are called as vectors in genetic engineering. There are many types of vectors, but the most common types are plasmids and cosmids.
