Initial Risk Assessment- The initial risk assessment is made by the investigator on the basis of the risk group (RG) to which the organism, on which he proposes to conduct experiments, belongs. Organisms are classified into four risk groups based on their potential effects on a healthy human adult.

(1) Risk group 1 (RGl) agents are not associated with disease in healthy humans.

2) Organisms included in RG2 are associated with such human diseases, which are rarely serious and for which preventive or therapeutic interventions are often available.

(3) RG3 agents are associated with serious or lethal human diseases for which preventive or therapeutic interventions may be available.

(4) Organisms belonging to RG4 are likely to cause serious or lethal human disease for which preventive or therapentic interventions are not usually available.
