Secondary Treatment of Effluents - Secondary treatment involves aerobic treatment and may be used to bring down further the BOD. However, this is energy intensive and capital-intensive. The standard fixed as above, can not be achieved even after secondary treatment.

Under the Biotechnology Programme, anaerobic digestion (biomethanation) and secondary treatment have been recommended by DGTD as a national programme in India.

This will be techno economically viable and will help in pollution control and generation of non conventional energy in the form of methane. A number of Indian distilleries, therefore, have already entered in approved collaboration with foreign companies institutes for generation of methane gas from distillery effluent.
