Energy and Fuel Using Microorganisms - Hydrogen Production  - Hydrogen is also a renewable fuel, because the rawmaterial in the form of water is abundant and solar energy used for the decomposition of water to produce hydrogen, will be available for millions of years.
Furthermore, when used as a fuel, hydrogen gas causes no pollution and forms water thus renewing the raw material.
In view of this, hydrogen (H2) production is emerging as an important area of biotechnological research with respect to environment friendly non conventional and renewable source of energy.
In achieving this objective, the principle Used in photosynthetic machinery by green plants is used.
The chlorophyll helps in trapping solar energy in the form of ATP, which is utilized in photosynthesis

In this process, water is subjected to photolysis, which leads to splitting of water molecules into (i) oxygen, (ii) electrons and (iii) hydrogen ions (H+),The hydrogen ions do not get a chance to form hydrogen gas, but is used to form energy rich compounds like glucose, However, if these hydrogen ions can be converted into hydrogen gas (H2), the latter can be collected and used as a fuel. Enzymes hydrogenase and nitrogenase have been tried to convert hydrogen ions (H+)' into hydrogen gas (H2)
