ISO 14000 and EMS (Environment Management System)
Geneva based International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is involved with the development and maintenance of standards for various activities and processes. The organization has developed more than 9600 International Standards covering almost all technical fields. They had developed in the past a series of standards called ISO 9000 targeted tio product quality and consumer satisfaction. Now it is coming out with a new series of standards called ISO 14000 devoted to Environment Management System (EMS) for industries.

These standards will have thrust on preventing large scale environment degradation and also on maintaining the ecobalance. In October, 1994 a draft called ISO 140001 was released trio member bodies of ISO (it needs to be approved by 75% members, before it becomes international standard), and included audit by third party and guidance in the use of specification. ISO 14000 will create a set of commonly accepted EMS worldwide. This will not only protect environmental interests, but will also provide optimum economic benefits. An EMS model of a company should consist of an environment policy, a plant to fulfil this policy, capabilities to implement it, means of measuring, monitoring and evaluating its performance and finally to review and improve it regularly.

While ISO 14000 is expected to foster the need for eco-friendliness in industry, the developing countries fear that this is a strategy adopted by the developed countries to eliminate competition which developing countries are capable of preseting. This is due to the fact that environment friendly technologies required under ISO 14000 are available at a premium in the developing countries. Though compliance with ISI 14000 will be voluntary, developed nations will enforce these guidelines to rule their trade with other countries.
