Removal of Spilled Oil and Grease Deposits
Oil spills from oil tankers on land surface (e.g. beaches) and from ships on surface of water reservoirs, have been recognized as a major environmental hazard. This spilled oil is believed to destroy the habitats of aquatic animals and fish, create health problems for local residents and causes long term damage to the environment. Therefore, remediation efforts in this connection have been made, using chemical dispersants.

These chemical dispersant are believed to cause major pollution problems in shallow waters due to their toxic nature and persistence in the environment. Efforts have also been made in the past to wash the oil off the gravel and rocks in the area of oil spill, but this has been found to be expensive and time consuming. In view of this, if possible, environmentalists would prefer the use of microbiological degradation of oil, which will allow slow removal of oil from the environment, particularly from the bacteria or from the shallow waters. In order to achieve this objective, following methods have been used.
