Secondary Treatment
Secondary treatment involves aerobic treatment and may be used to ring down further the BOD. However, this is energy and capital-intensive. The standard fixed as above, can not be achieved even after secondary treatment. Under the Biotechnology Programme, anaerobic digestion (biomethanation) and secondary treatment have been recommended by DGTD as a national programme in India.

This will be techno-economically viable and will help in pollution control and generation of non-conventional energy in the form of methane. A number of India distilleries, therefore, have alteady entered in approved collaboration with foreign companies/institutes for generation of methane gas from distillery effluent.
