Mergers and Acquisitions of Biotechnology Companies
Another feature witnessed in biotechnology industry during 1990-2000 is the merger and/or acquisitions of biotechnology companies. In most cases, this was due to inability of several companies to retain their independent existence. For instance Celera Genomics announced acquisition of Axys Pharmaceuticals, and Lexicon Genetics announced purchase of Coelacanth. Many more mergers, acquisitions and collaborations will take place in the first decade of the 21st century.

One of the latest examples, towards the end of 2001, included merger of Sequinom and Gemini Genomics, both specialized in information mining for the Human Genome Project. While Sequenom has mass spectrometry-based genetic analysis system, Gemini Genomics specialized in clinical population genomics. The purpose of the merger was to combine the human genetic resources with the rapid analytical system to generate a more powerful data generating machine. This merger is seen as a synergistic effort, where two youthful and vigorous companies, which raised $ 250 million in IPO, decided to merge, not due to poverty, but due to well thought out strategy.
