Terminator Technology for Seed Protection
On March 3, 1998 a patent under the title 'Control of Plant Gene Expression' was issued jointly to' Delta & Pine Land and the US Department of Agriculture. In the media, the patent has been dubbed as 'Terminator Technology' which will probably be used to ensure that the farmers may not be able to save the seeds from their harvest for replantation.

This technique, it is believed, will be used to strengthen the rights of corporate plant breeders by getting around the legislation, which may allow the farmers to save and replant their own seeds under a sui generis system (discussed above). It has been argued that this technology will be used against the interest of poor farmers.
