'GRIM' and 'killer'

genes. Patents have also been granted to inducible promoters, which can be used to develop transgenic crops, the spraying of which with a chemical or the exposure of which to changed climatic conditions will activate a dormant 'suicide trait' in the insect demaging the crop.

A gene from a fly encoding 'GRIM protein' is an example. AstraZeneca also discovered 'killer genes' towards the same objective.

The use of these promoters will also be in the mutual interest of the seed company and the farmer.

Cell size. A genetic switch has also been discovered, where spraying of plants with a chemical can lead to increase of cells size.

This can be used to spray maize plants for strengthening their stalks to prevent lodging, or to spray tomato plants for harvesting tomato fruits suitable either for processing (small cells) or for fresh vegetable markets (bigger cells).

These example also illustrate how the technology can be used to serve the interest of the company and the farmer without any exploitation of the latter.
