How to sell ‘dirty seeds’ or ‘addict seeds’

One may argue that the seeds with negative characteristics, as above, will be rejected by the market.

According to RAFI, this is not necessarily so, because the giant seed companies (bubbed as ‘Gene Giants’) will be successful in getting the international seed regulations adjusted to suit the sale of these ‘dirty seds’.

According to RAFI, this will be achieved in two ways. First, the industry will argue that these ‘dirty seeds’ or ‘addict seeds’ will offer an additional level of biosafety for transgenic species, because the seeds, developed due to pollen from transgenic crop, developed due to pollen from transgenic crop, would be sterile and therefore crops/weeds.

Second, the industry may argue that the technology will protect the traitor fields (having valuable traits) from contamination due to traditional open-pollinated seeds in the adjoining fields.

It is argued that such a contamination may not only lead to loss of precise desirable traits, but may a\so render the transgenic crop attractive for certain pests and diseases against which it is not protected.

These observations of RAFI do not appear to be realistic and one can only hope that the regulatory agencies will not accept the technology as environment friendly on the above grounds, but instead will reject it on moral grounds (see later for more details).
