Some examples of patented traitor traits

Addict seeds/dirty seeds due to junkie genes.

During 1997 and 1998, several patents were allowed or applied for, where the seeds will not germinate or the plants will not grow well, unless exposed to specific chemicals.

WO9735983 Verminator II patent of AstraZeneca and a number of patents of Novartis provide examples, where the private companies will be able to produce 'addict seeds' or 'dirty seeds' carrying the so called 'junkie genes'.

This development, if ever becomes a reality, is however, unfortunate and should be fought at the international level, by formulating bioethical guidelines, which the seed companies will have to follow.

The patents granted in this connection can also be challenged, if necessary, and the varieties carrying these junky genes may be refused approval by the regulatory agencies on moral grounds (but see later).
