Traitor Technologies

It is believed that the traitor technology will enable and motivate the seed producer to improve upon a number of commercially important traits in a transgenic crop by introducing one or more trans genes, each one of which would be independently activated or deactivated by proprietary chemicals either at the time of sale of the seed or even later in the next generation.

A company may, therefore, provide the farmer with the option to select the traits of his interest, sometimes according to his purchasing power, and then spray or soak the seed to activate or deactivate the genes only for selected traits opted and paid for by the farmer.

The companies, may thus link the seed use with their proprietary chemicals, so that one is useless without the other. One may like to examine the advantages and disadvantages of these developments and the fears expressed in this connection.

Firstly, these transgenic crops, developed using the terminator/traitor technology, will be used by the farmers, only if it suits them, so that the traditional varieties will still be used by them.

Second, the transgenic technology will eventually become routine and cheap, so that the public institutes and universities will also be involved in their production, and that the giant companies will face some competition and would then like to collaborate with these public enterprises to enter the seed market.

Therefore although the development of these technologies appear to be against the interest of the farmers, it may also turn out eventually to their advantage,

becuase it will provide them with an option for chosing from a number of high yielding: transgenic varieties for cultivation.
