Promoters - Promoters from non plant sources express poorly in plants (except promoters of T -DNA) and promoters of non-animal sources express poorly in animals. Therefore, to obtain correct expression, genes transferred to plants should be linked to plant specific promoters and those transferred to animals should be linked to animal specific promoters.
These promoters can also be interchanged so as to confer on the transferred gene, a specific pattern of expression (tissue specific or stimulus specific or developmental stage specific expression). To illustrate this, some examples of promoters used in plants and insects will be discussed.
