Biobutanol- Initially, butanol was produced by strictly anaerobic fermentation by Clostridium acetobutylicum using molasses/cornmeal as substrate. However at present it is produced from propylene for industrial applications since this is cheaper than biobutanol.

Further, butanol obtained from either fermentation or from propylene is costlier than ethanol.

Therefore, efforts must be made to reduce the production cost of biobutanol to make it an attractive biofuel.

Gene cloning experiments using C. acetobutylicum are being carried out with a view to expand its substrate utilization range, to overexpress or modify the genes leading to enhanced butanol yields; and possibly to overcome product inhibition.
