Uses of Vacuum - Vacuum has been used to resolve volatile products like ethanol from the fermentation broth.

Either the fermentation vessel itself is kept under vacuum (impractical due to high energy needs) or, alternatively, the broth is circulated through a vacuum chamber, while the fermenter is kept at atmospheric pressure. Both approaches have been used to enhance ethanol production.
