Reduction of Competition for Limited Resources - Sometimes there is a competition for resources between host genes and cloned genes during protein synthesis. There are examples, where 16S rRNA was altered to create ribosomes which will allow protein synthesis on messages containing a corresponding mutation in Shine Delgarno sequence in mRNA.

This will allow translation of native genes on native ribosomes and that of cloned genes on mutant ribosomes, thus eliminating competition. A 35% increase in the expression of a cloned galactosidase gene was obtained following this approach.
