Agriculture -Recombinant DNA technology has not only enhanced the health of humans, but has also contributed to exciting developments in agricultural biotechnology. Using rDNA methods, transgenic plants and animals with desirable properties such as resistance to diseases/herbicides have been developed. Flowers with exotic shapes and colours have been genetically engineered by transgenic expression of pigment genes.
Recombinant growth hormones are now available for farm animals, resulting in leaner meat, improved milk yield and more efficient feed utilization. In future, transgenic plants and animals may serve as bioreactors for the production of medicinal or protein pharmaceuticals.
