Altering DNA Sequences by Frameshift Mutations - In this type of mutation, some nucleotides are added or deleted. This mutation leads to a change in number of nucleotide pairs in a gene, thus altering the reading frame of the gene. Hence they are called as frameshift mutations.

These mutations are also called as intermediate lesions. Frameshift mutations are classified into two types depending upon whether they increase or decrease the gene size.
