Mutations - This is a point mutation that changes a codon specifying an amino acid into a termination codon. Thus a truncated gene codes for a polypeptide that has lost a segment at its carboxyl terminal. In many cases, this segment will include amino acids essential for the protein's activity and mutant phenotype results.
Nonsense mutations cause premature termination of protein synthesis.
