Altering Gene Functions by Silent Mutations - This is a mutation which causes a change in the sequence of DNA but does not cause any damage or loss of function of a gene. Most silent mutations occur in the third nucleotide position of a codon of a reading frame. A silent mutation has no effect on the amino acid sequence of the gene product and does not give rise to mutant phenotype. Silent mutations play an important role in RFLP studies.
