Limitations of Somoclonal Variations - 1. The technique is applicable only to those species cell cultures of which regenerate complete plants.

2. Selected cell lines often show reduced or no regeneration potential.

3. Many selected clones show undesirable features like reduced fertility, growth and even overall performance.

4. Many of the selected clones are unstable, which necessitates careful and detailed evaluation for identification of stable clones.

5. Most agronomic traits, e.g., yield quality, etc., are not expressed at the cell level, and hence can not be selected for in vitro.
