Basic Requirements for Engineering Genes -

A. Chang and S. Cohen succeeded in cloning genes in 1973. Today it is routine work in many laboratories throughout the world. There are some basic requirements for successfully "engineering" genes:

(1) restriction enzymes,
(2) cloning vehicles (vectors) to carry the genes of interest, and
(3) detection and selection of cloned genes.

Each requirement is briefly discussed below and then genetic engineering in plants per se presented.
