Tissue Type Plasminogen Activator (t-PA) - A number of other proteins have also been produced using cultured cells. The most important of these proteins is the tissue type plasminogen activator (t P A). Clinical trials have shown that recombinant t PA is safe and effective for dissolving blood clots in patients with heart diseases and thrombotic disorders.

This protein is now being synthesized using cell cultures. Several other recombinant molecules that can be produced in large quantities using animal cell culture include the following: factor VIII, factor IX, protein C and immunoglobulins.

Similarly, several hormones and related molecules such as erythropoietin, relaxin, kallikrein, and human growth hormone, can also be synthesized using cell cultures. A number of antigens that arc used in viral vaccines are also being synthesized using cell cultures.
