Antibiotic Resistance Genes Found in R-Plasmids their Proteins -

Antibiotic (gene conferring resistance) Protein produced by the gene Mechanism of resistance
Ampicillin (amp) Penicillinase or β-lactamase Hydrolysis of C-N bond in β-lactam ring
Kanamycin (kan) Kanamycin acetyltransferase* N-acetylation of the antibiotic
Neomycin (nea) Aminogycoside phosphotransferase* O-phosphorylation of the antibiotic
Streptomycin (str) Streptomycin phosphotransferase Phosphorylation of -OH on the antibiotic
Streptomycin adenylate synthetase Adenylation of the -OH on the antibiotic

* The antibiotics kanamycin and neomycin are related; hence nea product also inactivates kanamycin, and kan product inactivates neomycin as well.
