Transfection of Fertilized Eggs OR Embryos - The production of transgenic animals requires transfection of specialized cells or embryos, since only eggs or embryos can develop into whole animals.

Contrary to this, in plants any cell or protoplast may be transformed, since undifferentiated plant cells, being totipotent, can develop into whole plants through differentiation and growth. The eggs may be modified by transfer of whole nuclei, whole chromosomes or parts thereof or DNA fragments.
