Herbicide Resistance -
Biodegradable herbicides are highly desirable in view of environmental concerns. Some of the bidegradable herbicides are nonselective. This has necessitated the development of crop plants resistant to these herbicides. Herbicides normally affect processes like photosynthesis or biosynthesis of essential amino acids.
Resistance to herbicides can be generated by three distinct strategies. In the first approach, genes that encode such target molecules that are insensitive to herbicide are used. In the second strategy, the target protein is overproduced. In the third approach, a pathway is introduced that detoxifies the herbicides.
