Other Genes for Insect Resistance -
Several important insect pests are not susceptible to the currently available Cry proteins. For such insects, alternative insecticidal proteins will be needed; inhibitors of digestive enzymes, e.g., cowpea trypsin inhibitor (CpTI), serine protease inhibitor (aprotinin), cystein protease inhibitor, and proteinase inhibitor II, and lectins appear to be quite promising.
These genes have been transferred into certain crop plants where they produce resistance to different insects, e.g., members of Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, etc.
