Overproduction of Target Molecules -

Overproduction of the target protein has generated resistance in the case of some herbicides, e.g., glyphosate, sulphonyl ureas and imidazolinones.

The transgenic petunia plants resistant to glyphosate were developed by transfer of a gene encoding EPSPS (5-enol-pyruvyl-shikimate-3-phosphate synthase) that overproduces this enzyme. This overexpressing gene was isolated from plants selected for herbicide resistance.
