Problems in Biochemical Production -
1. In most cases, low levels of production are the chief problem.
2. Purification of the desired biochemical from the biomass or the culture medium is called downstream processing. Generally, downstream processing from plants is more difficult and costlier than that from microorganisms mainly due to the low concentration of recombinant protein in the total biomass.
3. Sometimes, an accumulation of a transgene product may adversely affect the performance of plants.
