In India, alcohol produced from molasses is used as a feedstock for production of acetone and butanol. 1.5-1.9 MT of alcohol is used per MT of butanol and 2.2 MT of alcohol is used per MT of acetone.
Acetone, butanol and ethanol are recovered through continuous distillation and fractionation. Carbon dioxide produced is recovered and converted into liquid CO2 or dry ice. The residue left after the distillation may be dried and utilized as animal feed.
